Take Home Self Created Centers

I thought I would share what I do with Center Activities that come in magazines or online.  I like to make enough copies for the kiddos to put their own center together and then they can take it home to play.

Here is an example:

This Fall Lotto Center came from the Mailbox Magazine.
We put together the front on a piece of construction paper and used small paper clips and paper fasteners for spinners.

On the back, we put an envelope with the playing cards that go to the center.

The kiddos each took home and are able to play over and over again with their family!

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

I know Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is a favorite for many of us.  Here are some fun activities we did with the book!

We created our very own Coconut Tree with Coconuts in which we looked for magazine pictures to match each letter coconut!  I loved this activity because it causes my students to engage in cooperative learning...and they didn't even know it!  Students who finished quickly were allowed to help other students and letters that were tricky to find words for allowed a group of students to get together and really brainstorm!

We also made a coconut tree losing coconuts with the letters of our name!

Alphabetical Order

We took a paint sample that had nine samples on a sheet (got from my local hardware store) and the kids had to put letters in alphabetical order.

This would also work great with putting sight words in order or word families in alphabetical order.

Pilgrims (Thanksgiving) Unit

We are learning about Pilgrims in Kindergarten!

To start, we must learn where the Pilgrims came from.  So we created an interactive "Crossing of the Mayflower"!

We read our Pilgrim booklets!

We colored in a Mayflower Crossing Map with the starting point green for go and red for stop.

We also learned what life was like for Pilgrim children.

Check out the Pilgrims we made!

Owl Unit

I love, love, love owls!  This is probably one of my favorite units.

After learning that one of an owl's favorite treats is mice, we had to play a game.  So I created a hungry owl on cardboard and then I attached the mice to toilet paper tubes wrapped in gray ducktape.  Students played "Feed the Owl"!  They each had three tries to get as many mice in the owl's "beak".

I included a template which I used to freehand the owl in my download.  However, if freehanding isn't your thing, you could blow it up or use an overhead to trace.  I also included the mice to copy and put on tubes.

Check out this cute owl puppet we made!  I found a similar idea online but I am not sure who to give credit to! :(  Anyway, I made templates for this project to make it easier for the kiddos.

After reading our Oliver the Owl Booklets, we learned filled in a "What we learned" sheet.

We created Owl Night Scenes.

A Bat Unit

We are "Bat Crazy" this week!  We started out by reading "My Batty Book" and filling in each page as needed.

We made "Batty" Headbands and they were able to wear these all week as we worked on our "Bat" Unit.
We put -at words in a "batty" alphabetical order.

We had a "batty" blast!
